Turkish FM Mevlut Cavusoglu on a visit to Azerbaijan; denounces Armenia and slams calls for truce

Yesterday, on a visit to Baku, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu expressed his solidarity to Azerbaijan’s President amid its recent clashes with Armenia. Despite many international calls for a truce by Russia, France, and the US, the conflict has proceeded.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu censured calls for a ceasefire and asked the global community to support Azerbaijan, stating that the past truces had neglected to end Armenia's control of the territory of Azerbaijan.

According to AP reports, citing Cavusoglu, “Let’s have a cease-fire, ok, but what will happen after that? Will you be able to tell Armenia to immediately withdraw from Azerbaijan’s territory? Or are you able to draw up a solution for it to withdraw? No.”

The recent conflicts started on Sept. 27, when the Armenian powers attacked locals of Azerbaijani settlements and military sites in the area that let to casualties.

Throughout the last week, military activity in Nagorno-Karabakh, an area of conflict amid Armenia and Azerbaijan has brought about the demise of many people on both sides.

While the two nations have battled for occupying the territory for over 10 years, the recent clash is observed by analysts as the most serious one. The relations between the two territories have been tense from that point forward.

During the Soviet era, the Nagorno-Karabakh region was an autonomous region within Azerbaijan. It got independence from Azerbaijan in 1991. A huge war that broke out in 1992 killed around 30,000 individuals. When the war ended in 1994, the Armenian powers took control of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Recently, Armenian leaders have alleged Turkey for involvement in supplying weapons and fighters from Syria to Azerbaijan. However, Turkey has denied the allegations and has openly backed Azerbaijan in the recent ongoing conflict.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, who also met with Turkish FM Cavusoglu expressed gratitude towards Turkey for its support.

Aliyev added Turkey's support encourages us, invigorates us more, and simultaneously ensures the prosperity and stability in the province," Al Arabiya reported.
