Amidst
the escalation of tension between Greece and Turkey over the usage of energy
resources in the disputed territory of the Eastern Mediterranean, the European
Union has threatened Turkey with imposing sanctions.
According
to foreign media reports, on October 2, the president of the European Union the commission has urged Turkey to stop all its activities in the disputed
territory and maintain peace and stability in the region. She called on Ankara
to "abstain from unilateral actions" in the eastern Mediterranean
region.
This
happened during a meeting of the EU leaders where the chief said that the organization wants a positive and constructive relationship with Turkey. She
also added that the level of positive dialogue in the region is only possible
when Ankara abstains from its unilateral actions in the region.
A lot of countries have expressed their concerns about Turkey’s dominance over the
region. A few days earlier, seven European nations decided to meet up to
discuss their tensions on the kind of atmosphere in the Mediterranean region
and also urged the nation to end its illegal activities in the region.
The
countries that expressed their share of concerns were- France, Greece, Cyprus,
Malta, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, who gathered in Corsica for de-escalation of
tensions and to promote talks among each other.
The
leaders of all the nations have assured tehri support to Greece and Cyprus
saying that they are well aware of how they are facing hostile actions of
Turkey. They also said that if Turkey keeps in this behavior and rejects the dialogue then the Union is prepared to list down restrictive measures on
Erdogan's government.
The
United States Secretary, Mike Pompeo, also said that the US strongly supports
talks between Greece and Turkey. Pompeo is on a two-day trip to Athens.
Tensions
between Ankara and Athens escalated after the formerly sent boats to search for
energy resource sources in the Eastern Mediterranean, for which The EU warned
Ankara of possible sanctions.
