Impact of the US elections in the Middle East
The United States has always been an active agent in the Middle East. It is still arguable if this involvement has been fruitful for the region or has it intensified the situation but no matter what, whatever happens in the US or whoever holds the power in the US, it impacts the activities and politics of the Middle East.
To analyze what would the power in the US brings to the middle east, we have analyzed their current stance. For example, Iran. Iran is a country which was opposed by even the Obama government so no matter which administration takes over, it is to be noted that the treatment towards Iran will be strict. The only difference with Biden leading the charge will be the relaxation of sanctions that the US imposed on Iran’s economy.
While some may argue, but Trump has been more than firm regarding the sanctions on Iran but if Biden comes into the picture, he will most probably try to undo what the Trump administration has done. From what can be gathered through his campaigns and speeches, it is clear that he will not take a radical approach towards Iran and will rather want to establish a stable bond with the nation. He will do so to show the world what Trump has done wrong. But again in doing so, Biden will have to let go of all the allies that the US government made for itself over the last five years due to its harsh treatment of Iran.
The US has portrayed Iran to be a sponsor of terrorism and since then has imposed all kinds of sanctions on the country, seriously damaging its economy. All those nations that have established and promoted themselves against terrorism have come to his support of his move. Countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan have stood against the country. Along with Iran, Qatar and Turkey are also left hostile in the Arab world.
But with the arrival of Biden, this might change. He will loosen the grip on Iran, making it difficult for other countries to trust the administration. Oil analysts say that if Biden came to power, Iran could export oil up to 2 million barrels a day. That will be a huge boost to the country’s economy. According to an article in the Washington Post, “The majority of the Iranian people and Iranian elite prefer that Biden come to power but there are differences,” Ali Omidi, a professor of political science at the University of Isfahan.
Another new player in the politics of the Middle East is Israel, especially in the last few months. With the historic achievement of the UAE and Israel normalizing their relations and opening borders for each other, the Trump administration predicted that other countries will follow a similar suit. Bahrain did. Bahrain was the second country to normalize diplomatic boundaries with Israel. Trump has shown a little too much interest in Netanyahu and his politics. Biden on the other hand will try to diminish this interest and can treat Israel like any other normal ally.
But the countries which are the most affected right now--Syria, Yemen, Libya, will hardly see any changes. It is not in the nature of democrats to work for these countries but unlike the present administration, it will also not do anything that disturbs the peace. The politics with Biden as a face will be safe but politics with Trump will have a larger impact--positive or negative.
