German Foreign Minister issues threats to Ankara as it continues to explore East Mediaterranean

Germany has come out in support of Cyprus and Greece against Turkey as it tries to use all of the oil and gas available in the disputed area of the East Mediterranean region.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Tuesday said that Turkey should refrain from provoking the disputed region and as the European Union partners it supports Cyprus and Greece. The foreign minister was on his way to the two countries and just before his flight, he said, “Ankara must end the interplay between detente and provocation if the government is interested in talks - as it has repeatedly affirmed.”

He asserted pressure on Turkey to not get into deep waters of the disputed territory and asked Ankara to remain open for talks and further dialogues.

Turkey had once again broken the accord by announcing that it will be sending a ship to the region on Monday which was strongly reverted by Greece who asked the European Union for strict action on Turkey and also asked the union to impose sanctions on the country.

As Mass arrived in Athens, he was revived by the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis who also addressed the press saying that the foreign minister had visited the country at difficult times. The Prime Minister talked about two proposals given to Turkey during the recent summit and said that they had offered a renewed partnership or consequences in the event that aggressive behavior continues. And it seems that Turkey has chosen the second path.

Even Mass agreed that what Turkey is doing is completely contrary to what was agreed upon and it is diminishing the spirits of the European nations.

According to reports, the Turkish ships will be exploring the same region it was exploring in August and September. The ship called Oruc Reis will operate "from 12 to 20 October" in the disputed waters despite the warning of the involved nations and the European Union. Ankara has been entering the controversial region since August 10 and even though Greece, Cyprus and the EU has made a lot of attempts to stop Turkey and open dialogue, the country has not reacted to the threats.
