The change of fortune for Ennahda Movement
The Islamist organization Ennahda reemerged in Tunisia after the Jasmine Revolution of 2011, and it has regularly been the largest party in parliament and the deciding factor in coalition governments. As a result, it has taken the brunt of the growing discontent among many Tunisians with its post-revolutionary political structure. Ennahda and its leader, Rached Ghannouchi, have attempted to fight the coup since President Kais Saied's seizure of power in July 2021 and the following dissolution of parliament without inciting a violent crackdown by the state or losing allies and party supporters. Nevertheless, Tunisian courts barred Ghannouchi from leaving the country and froze the bank accounts of some Ennahda leaders in the run-up to a national referendum that was supposed to take place on July 25 to ratify a new draught constitution.
