Rising Tensions: What US Strikes on Iranian-backed Groups Mean for Middle East Stability

Image
In a sharp escalation of hostilities, US forces conducted targeted strikes on Iranian-backed groups in Syria. CENTCOM reported that these strikes were a direct response to recent attacks on US personnel, emphasizing the US’s intention to deter such groups from further aggression. General Michael Erik Kurilla stressed that any attack on US forces would be met with decisive action. The US has maintained a presence in Syria and Iraq to prevent the resurgence of ISIS, with around 900 troops stationed in Syria and another 2,500 in Iraq. The region, however, remains a powder keg, with multiple groups vying for power, and recent clashes with Iranian-aligned forces reveal the complex dynamics that challenge US operations. CENTCOM announced that the strikes were aimed at degrading the capabilities of these Iranian-backed groups, hitting nine targets across two locations. By focusing on strategic sites, the US hopes to limit the operational reach of these factions and prevent future assaul...

Diplomatic Strain Between Allies: US and Israel

Image
The long-standing alliance between the United States and Israel faces a rare point of contention as the US government urges Israel to cease attacks on UN peacekeepers stationed in southern Lebanon. For decades, the two countries have enjoyed a strong military and strategic relationship, but this diplomatic request marks a significant moment of divergence. UN peacekeepers, serving as a stabilizing force in Lebanon since the late 1970s, have found themselves caught in the escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah. Israel’s recent military campaign in southern Lebanon has involved targeting Hezbollah positions, but also resulted in the endangerment of peacekeepers. The UN post in Naqoura, just 50 meters from a perceived threat identified by Israeli forces, was one of the incidents that led to the US appeal. While Israel argues that UNIFIL has not succeeded in stabilizing the region and has asked peacekeepers to relocate, the US has expressed concern about the broader implications o...

Could Kamala Harris Change the Course of U.S.-Israel Relations in 2024?

Image
As Kamala Harris contends for the U.S. presidency, her foreign policy stance in the Middle East could bring sweeping changes. Her approach to Israel contrasts sharply with Donald Trump’s, who favored policies that Israeli leaders openly appreciated, such as recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Harris, by comparison, has taken a humanitarian stance, evident in her calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, signaling a shift from Trump’s hardline tactics. Harris's views have raised concerns among Israelis who feel her administration may pressure Israel on contentious issues. Trump, who unilaterally supported Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights, was lauded in Israel for recognizing their control. Residents in the Trump Heights settlement view Trump as a stalwart ally, fearing that Harris could adopt a more traditional approach, emphasizing diplomacy and humanitarian concerns. The Palestinian perspective on the election highlights their struggle under U.S. policies. Many Palestinians ...

US Raises Alarms Over Potential Iran Missile Transfers to Russia Amid Escalating Ukraine Conflict

Image
The deepening partnership between Iran and Russia has ignited serious concerns from the United States and its allies. Recent reports suggest that Iran may transfer ballistic missiles to Russia, a move seen as a sharp escalation in the Ukraine war. The United States, following these developments, has raised alarms over the potential arms transfers, highlighting the grave implications of such actions. Reports of Imminent Missile Transfers According to Reuters, Russia is expecting to receive hundreds of Fath-360 close-range ballistic missiles from Iran. These satellite-guided missiles are short-range but highly effective in targeted strikes, and their addition to Russia’s arsenal would represent a significant boost in its military capability during the Ukraine war. The Wall Street Journal reported that the short-range missiles had already been delivered, citing an unnamed U.S. official. This follows reports that Russian military personnel were undergoing training in Iran on the use ...

Biden Criticizes Netanyahu: A Rare Public Rebuke Amidst Gaza Ceasefire Struggles

Image
In an unusually candid moment, President Joe Biden publicly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for not doing enough to secure a ceasefire deal in Gaza. This rare public rebuke underscores the growing tension between the United States and Israel, especially as the conflict in Gaza drags on with no resolution in sight. Biden's Candid Remarks Speaking to reporters outside the White House on Monday, Biden expressed his frustration with Netanyahu's handling of the ceasefire negotiations. When asked whether he believed Netanyahu was doing enough to finalize a ceasefire agreement with Hamas, Biden simply responded, “No.” This brief but pointed criticism is significant, as it marks one of the few instances where Biden has openly criticized the Israeli leader during the ongoing conflict. Despite this criticism, Biden remains optimistic about the chances of reaching a ceasefire. He told reporters that the U.S. is “very close” to presenting a final proposal that could ...

U.S. and Israeli Strategies Against Potential Iranian Retaliation

Image
The current geopolitical climate in the Middle East is fraught with uncertainty as Israel and its allies brace for possible Iranian retaliation. With the Israeli military achieving “peak readiness” and the U.S. reinforcing its military presence, the international focus has turned to averting a new conflict. The Military Build-Up Israel’s military has significantly ramped up its defensive and offensive capabilities. According to Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari, the country’s forces are conducting daily strikes in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah strongholds to preempt any hostile actions. This proactive approach aims to reassure the Israeli populace and deter any aggression from Iran or its proxies. Simultaneously, the U.S. is fortifying its support for Israel. General Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon spokesman, announced the deployment of the guided-missile submarine Georgia to the Middle East. This move, accompanied by the dispatch of additional aircraft and warships, underscore...

The allegations came in the wake of a report from Microsoft, which detailed foreign attempts to meddle in the upcoming U.S. election. The Trump campaign’s statement, though lacking direct evidence, cited the long-standing tensions between Trump and Iran as a motive for the alleged cyberattack. According to Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign...

'Xi Jinping Urges Peaceful Coexistence between China and US in Letter to Joe Biden'

Image
In a letter dated January 1, Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed the importance of pursuing peaceful coexistence and mutual respect as the foundation for positive relations between China and the United States. The letter, sent to US President Joe Biden, reflects ongoing efforts by both nations to mend their strained diplomatic ties. In commemorating 45 years of diplomatic relations between China and the US, Xi Jinping, as reported by state-run broadcaster CCTV, remarked, "Over the past 45 years, China-US relations have weathered storms and moved forward. The relationship between the two nations remains delicate, with particular sensitivity surrounding Beijing's strong ties with Russia and its stance on Taiwan. Image
North Korea accused a surveillance plane by the United States of violating its airspace on Monday and slammed Washington's intentions to deploy a nuclear missile submarine near the Korean peninsula. According to a spokesperson for the North's Ministry of National Defence, US spy planes conducted "provocative" flights last month, with one surveillance jet invading its airspace over the East Sea "several times." According to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the spokesperson reportedly said, “There is no guarantee that such a shocking accident as the downing of the U.S. Air Force strategic reconnaissance planes will not happen in the East Sea of Korea.” The spokesperson talked about similar incidents in the past. He said that once Pyongyang shot down US aircraft. He also called the deployment of United States strategic nuclear assets to the Korean peninsula as "the most undisguised nuclear blackmail.” The statement further read, "The p...

Washington wants to keep the Iranian-seized ammunition headed for Yemen

Image
The Justice Department announced on Friday that the US is attempting to retain possession of more than 1 million rounds of ammunition that the US Navy captured in December as it was being transported from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to extremists in Yemen. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement that "the United States foiled a major operation by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to transport weapons of war into the hands of a militant group in Yemen." Thousands of proximity fuses for rocket-propelled grenades as well as more than a million rounds of ammunition are among the weapons that the Justice Department is now requesting be forfeited. On December 1, US navy forces in the Gulf of Oman stopped a fishing trawler carrying more than 50 tons of rocket propellant, fuses, and artillery rounds that were being smuggled from Iran to Yemen, according to the Navy. According to the report, they discovered over 1,100 kg of propellan...

White House: Despite fatal strikes, the US will not abandon its role in Syria

Image
Despite attacks on American personnel there last week by Iran-backed militia, the United States will not withdraw from its almost eight-year-old deployment to Syria where it is combating the remains of Daesh, the White House said on Monday, according to Reuters. On March 23, a one-way attack drone that was flying overhead bombed a US base in Syria, killing one American contractor, injuring another, and wounding five US soldiers. A Syrian war monitoring organization reported that as a result of American retaliatory airstrikes and gunfights, three Syrian soldiers, 11 Syrian militiamen , and five foreign combatants who supported the regime were all killed. John Kirby, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, stated that while he was not aware of any new attacks over the previous 36 hours, "We're going to keep cautious." Kirby also brought up President Joe Biden's Friday speech, in which he warned Iran that the US will use an action to save its citizens...

Michael Alan Ratney confirmed as US ambassador to Saudi Arabia

Image
Michael Alan Ratney, an American diplomat who currently serves in the United States Department of State, has been confirmed as the United States ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The US Senate confirmed the news in a voice vote on Tuesday, filling one of the vacant diplomatic posts in the region. The US did not have an ambassador in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for two years. When former US President Donald Trump took office, he picked John Abizaid, a retired United States Army general, to be the envoy in Saudi Arabia. The former US Central Command commander served as the US Ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 2019 to 2021. The post became vacant since he left his post in January 2021. When Joe Biden took office, US-Saudi relations began to dip. The US froze arms sales to the Kingdom and lifted the terror designation of the Iran-backed Houthi militia. In 2022, US President Joe Biden confronted Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over The Washington Post jou...

US and UK say the IAEA report shows Iran inconsistent in meeting obligations

Image
The United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany have said that an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear work shows that Tehran is being inconsistent in meeting its obligations under a Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty agreement, an international treaty with the aim to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. The four countries issued a joint statement, alleging that Iran was inconsistent in meeting its obligations under NPT. These countries reportedly said, “As stated by the IAEA, this unnotified change is inconsistent with Iran’s obligations under its NPT-required Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.” They were referring to the IAEA report, in which the U.N. nuclear watchdog criticised Iran for making an undeclared change to the interconnection between the two clusters of advanced machines enriching uranium to up to 60 per cent purity at the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant (FFEP), an underground uranium enrichment facility i...

Libya’s Dbeibah defends alleged Lockerbie bomber’s extradition

Image
On Thursday, Libya's acting prime minister confirmed and defended the extradition of the man who is thought to have built the bomb that brought down a Pan Am aircraft over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988.  Premier Abdelhamid Dbeibah of Tripoli claimed that by cooperating "when it comes to crimes done outside of its jurisdiction," he has "behaved with respect for the sovereignty of Libya."  Since his extradition, Dbeibah has faced harsh condemnation from both political opponents and human rights advocates.  The suspected intelligence agent for Muammar Qaddafi's government in Libya, Abu Agila Mohammad Masud, 71, appeared in a US court on Monday to answer charges related to the terror attack that claimed 270 lives.  Two years ago, the US brought charges against him in connection with the Lockerbie bombing.  Masud was "responsible for the bomb-making cell" under Qaddafi's rule, according to Dbeibah, who made the claim in a speech that was aired on n...

France cement firm fined $778m for funding Daesh in Syria

Image
French cement maker Lafarge has pleaded guilty in the US to supporting Daesh and other terrorist groups in Syria and has agreed to pay a $777.8 million penalty. According to Reuters, the company which was bought by Switzerland's Holcim Group in 2015, made the admission yesterday in a New York federal court, making it the first time a company had pleaded guilty in the US to aid terrorists. Prosecutors had accused Lafarge and its Syrian subsidiary of Lafarge Cement Syria of paying Daesh and Al-Nusra Front (since rebranded as Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham) via intermediaries the equivalent of approximately $5.92 million between 2013 and 2014 in order to continue running its factory and using their checkpoints. This enabled the company to earn $70 million in revenues from its plant operating in Jalabiya near the Turkish border, the prosecution said. Lafarge eventually evacuated the plant in September 2014 after Daesh took control of the town and the factory and sold it for the equivalent of $...

US student campaign calls for boycotting the occupation

A student body at a liberal women's university in the US called for the liberation of Palestine and to boycott the occupation, especially in Boston, Massachusetts, where the university is located. The student body at Wellesley College of Liberal Arts, which dates back to 1870, published an article calling for the "liberation of Palestine " and listed companies supporting the Israeli occupation in an effort to encourage students to boycott them. The article described companies doing business with Israel as "pro-apartheid." Israel's Jerusalem Post newspaper noted that the student body at the university supported this project as one of the ways to stop the injustice of the occupation in the Palestinian territories, by boycotting everything related to Israel. The university administration has said it does not support the project, calling it anti-Semitic, after a widespread Israeli media attack that accused the education institution of becoming "a beacon o...

Russia's referendum to annex Ukrainian territory

Image
As the United States prepared a U.N. resolution denouncing the referendums as fakes and Russia remained defiant, Russian-installed officials in four of Ukraine's seized areas announced overwhelming support for joining Russia. Additionally, according to U.S. sources, the US is planning a fresh set of penalties against Russia should Moscow acquire Ukrainian land as well as an upcoming $1.1 billion arms deal for Ukraine. After Germany, Sweden, and Denmark claimed that attacks caused significant leakage from two Russian energy pipelines, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken stated that the United States and its partners remained committed to European energy security. Whoever the leakers might remain largely unknown. Votes that were hurriedly organized were held over the course of five days in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, as well as in the southern areas of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, which together make up around 15% of Ukrainian territory. Officials nominated by Ru...
