'Xi Jinping Urges Peaceful Coexistence between China and US in Letter to Joe Biden'
In a letter dated January 1, Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed the importance of pursuing peaceful coexistence and mutual respect as the foundation for positive relations between China and the United States. The letter, sent to US President Joe Biden, reflects ongoing efforts by both nations to mend their strained diplomatic ties.
In commemorating 45 years of diplomatic relations between China and the US, Xi Jinping, as reported by state-run broadcaster CCTV, remarked, "Over the past 45 years, China-US relations have weathered storms and moved forward. It has not only improved the well-being of people from both countries but also contributed to global peace, stability, and prosperity."
The relationship between the two nations remains delicate, with particular sensitivity surrounding Beijing's strong ties with Russia and its stance on Taiwan. However, there has been a recent thaw in relations, notably following the meeting between Xi Jinping and Joe Biden in November in San Francisco. The meeting resulted in some modest diplomatic achievements, signaling a slight improvement in bilateral ties.
In response to Xi's letter, President Biden acknowledged that the relationship between the United States and China has played a crucial role in fostering prosperity and opportunities for both nations, as well as for the global community.
“I look forward to building on the progress made by our predecessors, as well as on our meetings and discussions, to continue to advance the relationship between the US and China," stated Biden in his congratulatory letter.
