US, Allies Warn Houthi Rebels Of "Consequences" If Ship Attacks Continue
The United States and twelve allied nations, including Britain, Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, and Bahrain, have jointly issued a stern warning to Yemen's Houthi rebels. The statement, released by the White House, demands an immediate end to the rebels' illegal attacks on Red Sea shipping vessels and the release of unlawfully detained vessels and crews. The Houthi rebels are cautioned that they will bear responsibility for the consequences if they persist in threatening lives, the global economy, and the free flow of commerce in the critical waterways of the region.
This warning follows reports that the Biden administration is considering direct strikes on the rebels should the attacks persist. The signatories express their commitment to protecting the Red Sea's movement, through which 12 percent of global trade passes. The Houthis' actions, claiming solidarity with Palestinians in the Israel-Hamas conflict, have escalated tensions, prompting this united international response.
