Egyptian President Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Middle East Amid Rising Tensions
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi has issued a stark warning against the dangers of military escalation in the Middle East, addressing multiple fronts, according to a statement from the Egyptian Presidency.
During a meeting with Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, President Sisi emphasized the critical need to defuse the current situation through an immediate and urgent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. He underscored the importance of enforcing the delivery of humanitarian aid to the region. Egypt, he asserted, will persist in its unwavering efforts to support the people in Gaza, providing aid and relief while actively working to de-escalate the situation.
The Greek Minister acknowledged the pivotal role of Egypt as an indispensable cornerstone for stability in the Middle East. Both parties agreed on the urgent necessity to swiftly move towards a just and comprehensive settlement for the Palestinian cause, considering it the central issue in the region and a pathway to achieving lasting peace, security, and stability.
The current escalation in the Middle East, particularly the ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, has resulted in a rising Palestinian death toll. As of Wednesday, the Gaza-based Health Ministry reported 24,448 casualties. The Israeli offensive in Gaza was initiated in response to a surprise attack by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in a significant loss of life, with approximately 1,200 people killed, according to Israeli tallies.
