North Korea condemns the US moves to deploy nuclear missile submarine

North Korea accused a surveillance plane by the United States of violating its airspace on Monday and slammed Washington's intentions to deploy a nuclear missile submarine near the Korean peninsula.

According to a spokesperson for the North's Ministry of National Defence, US spy planes conducted "provocative" flights last month, with one surveillance jet invading its airspace over the East Sea "several times."

According to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the spokesperson reportedly said, “There is no guarantee that such a shocking accident as the downing of the U.S. Air Force strategic reconnaissance planes will not happen in the East Sea of Korea.”

The spokesperson talked about similar incidents in the past. He said that once Pyongyang shot down US aircraft. He also called the deployment of United States strategic nuclear assets to the Korean peninsula as "the most undisguised nuclear blackmail.”

The statement further read, "The present situation proves that the situation of the Korean peninsula is coming closer to the threshold of nuclear conflict due to the U.S. provocative military action.”

The United States announced in April 2023 that it would send a nuclear ballistic submarine to South Korean ports for the first time in decades.

Yoon Suk Yeol, President of South Korea, met Joe Biden, President of the United States, in Washington, on a six-day state visit to the US. They commemorated the 70th anniversary of the mutual defense treaty.

 In recent months, the US and South Korea have forged an alliance to fight against North Korea. The South Korean President also said in an interview with The Washington Post, “It is indeed the most successful alliance in history.”

The two countries also ramped up defense cooperation. The United States and South Korea also conducted joint military exercises with advanced stealth jets.
