New 5.6 magnitude earthquake hits Turkey, kills 1
A new earthquake of 5.6 magnitude shook southeast Turkey on Monday, killing one person, injuring 110 and destroying 29 buildings. This comes three weeks after a powerful earthquake hit Turkey and Syria, killing more than 50,000 people across the region.
According to Reuters, the new quake damaged some buildings. According to the government's disaster agency, the epicentre of the tremor was the Yesilyurt district in the Malatya province in Turkey. The district was also hit by the destructive February 6 earthquake.
Reportedly, the authorities rescued several people believed to be trapped in the rubble of collapsed buildings. The local mayor, Mehmet Cinar, asked authorities to check whether there was anyone trapped under rubble.
According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), four new earthquakes and 45 aftershocks were felt in Turkey following the two massive quakes on February 6.
A video went viral on social media, showing a rescue team pulling out a man alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in the province of Malatya. His daughter was also rescued from the same apartment block. AFAD's general director of earthquake and risk reduction, Orhan Tatar, expressed concern on the matter.
Yunus Sezer, head of Turkey's AFAD reportedly confirmed that search and rescue teams were deployed to five buildings to check if anyone was trapped under rubble.
Turkish media criticised contractors and developers for using bad construction materials and failing to comply with safety guidelines while making apartments and buildings.
The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, announced the rebuilding of 270,000 homes in the devastated provinces affected by the earthquake within a year.
The destructive earthquakes have left 1.5 million people homeless in the country. Thousands of people are also struggling without shelter or sanitation.
On February 6, the earthquake in Syria and Turkey caused damage to several buildings and killed thousands of people.
