Germany expels 2 Iranian diplomats over death sentence handed out to German national
Germany has said it is expelling two Iranian diplomats over the death sentence handed out to one of its citizens in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
On Tuesday, the Iranian authorities announced that Jamshid Sharmahd, a 67-year-old Iranian-German national, was sentenced to death after being convicted of terrorist charges. Iran accused him of heading a pro-monarchist group, which participated in a deadly 2008 bombing. The man was arrested in 2020. Iran accused him of being the leader of the US-based group Tondar. The Iranian authorities reportedly also accused him of being in contact with US and Israeli officials and agents. The Iranian judiciary said that Sharmahd successfully executed five terrorist acts.
Iran’s judiciary’s Mizan news agency said that the man received a death sentence on charges of “corruption on earth.” Subsequently, Germany asked two employees of the Iranian embassy to leave the country immediately. Annalena Baerbock, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, said, “We call on Iran to revoke Jamshid Sharmahd’s death sentence and provide him with a fair appeal process based on the rule of law.”
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also slammed Iran over the death sentence. He wrote on Twitter, “The Iranian regime fights its own people in every possible way and disregards human rights.”
A foreign ministry spokesman said, “We will continue to provide consular support to the extent that this is possible. This is a first-instance verdict and we will follow the progress of the situation.”
In recent years, Iran arrested many dual nationals and foreigners, mostly on charges related to corruption on earth, espionage and national security.
Last year, Iran arrested the daughter of ex-president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani over the charges of inciting anti-government protests in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Earlier this month, Iran released Fariba Adelkhah, a French-Iranian anthropologist and academic at Sciences Po.
