Following severe earthquakes, four Australians are missing in Turkiye, Syria
Following Monday's devastating earthquakes, The Guardian revealed that four Australians are still unaccounted for in Turkey and Syria.
According to the nation's Foreign Ministry, assistance is being given to the relatives of the missing citizens as well as to another 40 or so Australians who are in the earthquake zone.
We've all seen the pictures of destruction and heard the tales of human tragedy that we are witnessing,” Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a statement to the Australian Senate on Wednesday.
“Therefore, I'm sure we all want the government to urge our military to offer this support even though they are far away.”
Australia will send 73 defense personnel and $10 million in funds to help with rescue and relief efforts, according to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
These highly trained urban search and rescue professionals can find, provide medical care to, and evacuate people who have become trapped or harmed by a structural collapse.
"I express my deepest condolences to everyone affected by the horrific earthquakes and aftershocks that hit Turkey, Syria, and neighboring countries.”
"Our spirits are down. The horrific and heartbreaking scenes of loss cannot be avoided, Albanese continued.
Sadullah Karatas, a board member of the Brisbane Turkish Islamic Society, claimed that Australians with ties to Turkey and Syria were having a "tough time" as they observed the catastrophe from other parts of the world.
Everyone is going through a lot of difficulties, and nobody seems to know how to deal with it. Since we are not there, we nearly feel helpless for the brothers and sisters who are trapped beneath this wreckage.
"We wish we could just go and physically clear the rubble," he continued.
To deliver supplies including food, medication, and blankets to the impacted communities, the group has established a donation fund.
