In the Middle East, Iran Creates The Biggest Threat to Israel

Israel, the Middle East, and the rest of the world are still seriously threatened by Iran.

Israel's top security and defense officials raised the alarm about Iran's continued progress towards a nuclear weapon this week at the Herzliya Conference at Reichman University.

According to IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi, Iran has recently increased its uranium enrichment levels. He said that this is a serious issue and shows that the Islamic Republic is headed towards nuclear capability. Overall, it appears that Iran will continue to behave badly on several fronts, and Israel must maintain its vigilance.

While we shouldn't be overly alarmed about the Iranian threat, we also need to prepare for the ongoing provocations that Tehran will likely throw at us soon, as stated in the remarks made by our senior defense officials, including Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

The good news is that despite ominously increasing its uranium enrichment past the level required for civilian use, Iran has not yet decided to embark on the path toward developing a nuclear weapon and has not quite attained the 90% level required for weaponization. Iran would need to create a weapon as well as the means to carry and test it even after reaching that level.

Iran already violates every rule of international law

Every rule of international law has already been broken by Tehran. The only crime committed by innocent dissidents who rebel against the regime is their brutal execution. 

Attacks on ships in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman have increased, and essential Western nations are working to secure the sea lanes to shield tankers from Iranian attack. Gallant, however, highlighted Iran's comparatively impunity at sea this week when he said that it had converted ships into floating terror platforms.

Israel has known for a long time that Iran poses the region's biggest threat. Contrary to earlier conventional military or terrorist threats, Iran now seeks to use a sprawling matrix of threats to harm the Jewish state. 

Tehran is open about wanting to attack Israel from various angles. It supports and funds proxies and militias around Israel, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, to carry out attacks against it to weaken Israel domestically.

Israel is equipped to take on Iran and its allies. Both our friends in the area and our allies in the West recognize the importance of stopping Iran's attacks. We must keep up our close cooperation with our allies and look for opportunities.

For instance, an essential part of Israel's readiness to counter Iranian threats is its defense cooperation with the US, including joint exercises with the US Central Command. The US, UK, and France must also take maritime action to secure the waterways. 

Israel's growing awareness of the Iranian maritime threat strengthens our alliance with nations who share this concern, which is crucial in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Oman, and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Israel must maintain its emphasis on promoting stability in the face of the Iranian threat despite the passage of a new budget. Even though we might have internal conflicts, we must demonstrate to the rest of the world that these conflicts do not give Iran or its proxies a chance to pose a threat to us. Adversaries like Hezbollah seem to understand that they have in the past miscalculated us when weighing their attacks.
