Saudi Arabia welcomes Biden’s announcement on the killing of Al-Qaeda leader Al-Zawahiri
Saudi Arabia has welcomed United States president Joe Biden’s announcement on the killing of terrorist Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) said that Al-Zawahiri is considered one of the leaders of terrorism because he plans the execution of heinous terrorist operations in the US, Saudi Arabia, and other countries. The Kingdom also accused Al-Zawahiri of killing thousands of innocent people of different nationalities and religions, including Saudi citizens.
Saudi Arabia told other countries to cooperate and put international efforts to combat and remove terrorism, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Tuesday, citing a foreign ministry statement.
According to the statement by Saudi Arabia, the country called on all countries to cooperate and protect innocent people from terrorist organizations.
The United States killed Al-Zawahiri in a drone strike in Afghanistan. US President Joe Biden confirmed this news on Sunday. Al-Zawahiri was killed in a counter-terrorism operation carried out by the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, on Sunday. Biden reportedly said, "Now justice has been delivered and this terrorist leader is no more.”
Al-Zawahiri
Al-Zawahiri took over al-Qaeda after the death of Osama Bin Laden in 2011. Al-Zawahiri and Osama plotted the 9/11 attacks together. Al-Zawahiri was one of the US's "most wanted terrorists". Biden said that his killing will bring closure to families of almost 3,000 victims of the 2001 attacks. Biden also said Zawahiri had also masterminded other terrorist activities in other countries. Zawahiri reportedly masterminded the suicide bombing of the USS Cole naval destroyer in Aden in October 2000 which killed 17 US sailors. He also masterminded the 1998 attacks on the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.
Al-Zawahiri was on the balcony of a safe house when the drone fired two missiles at him. He was killed after the missiles hit him.
