Saudi Arabia And Japan Reaffirm Close Bilateral Ties

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi held bilateral talks on Tuesday in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, further strengthening the cooperation between the two countries.

The Japanese foreign minister expressed his gratitude to Saudi Arabia for its condolences sent after the death of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Hayashi reportedly said, “I welcome the cooperation between both countries, such as the telephone call between Japanese Prime Minister Kishida and his royal highness Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.” He further said, “I hope that the bilateral ties will be further strengthened.”

Japan’s current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also received a call from Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, during his visit to Japan.

Prince Faisal bin Farhan said that Saudi Arabia wants to further strengthen its relationship with Japan through cooperation in various fields. Reportedly, PM Kishida also said that he wants to further expand the friendly relationship with Saudi Arabia as a strategic partner under the “Japan-Saudi Vision 2030”.

Japan–Saudi Arabia relations

The official relations between Japan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) were established in 1955. In 2015, Japan became the third-largest trading partner of Saudi Arabia, importing $45.4 billion in petroleum products and exporting $7.5 billion in finished goods. In 2019, both countries signed several agreements that aim at implementing projects in several strategic areas.

In March 2022, both countries agreed to bolster cooperation on stabilizing global crude oil markets after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sent prices surging across the world. Both countries also confirmed close coordination in responding to the crisis in Ukraine.

The Japanese PM Kishida expressed his appreciation for the stable supply of crude oil from Saudi Arabia. He also requested continued cooperation in stabilizing the international crude oil market.
