Joe Biden to visit Israel in the next few months, says White House
The United States President, Joe Biden, will visit Israel in the next few months. It will be Biden’s first visit to Israel as president. The White House confirmed the news after a call with Israel’s Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Sunday.
Biden and Bennett held the second phone conversation on Sunday. Bennett told Biden about Israel’s efforts “to stop the violence in Jerusalem.” There have been clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians in recent months.
Biden takes note of ongoing efforts between Israeli and Palestinian officials
More than 300 Palestinians have been arrested and more than 200 wounded since Israeli forces launched incursions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem.
The White House said in its statement that Biden took note of ongoing efforts between Israeli forces and Palestinian officials to lower tensions in East Jerusalem during the holy month of Ramadan.
Iran nuclear deal
The two leaders also discussed the Iran nuclear deal on a phone call. The leaders had also discussed the threat posed by Iran. They discussed Iran’s demand for the removal of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from an American terror blacklist.
As per the Israeli readout, Bennett doesn’t want Biden to remove the Revolutionary Guards from the US “terrorism” list. Bennett said, “I am sure that President Biden will not allow the Revolutionary Guards to be removed from the list.”
The nuclear talks were at a standstill because of the Iranian demand that Washington removes the IRGC from the State Department’s list of Foreign Terrorist Organisations.
