The Middle East and North Africa to be worst hit by climate change: report

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is likely to be the first to face the risk of climate change. The region is likely to face a scarcity of water and depleted freshwater resources.

The water scarcity is projected to increase by 15 percent due to global warming of 2°C, a report released on Tuesday said. The report from the World Government Summit organization said that climate change may harm global stability and development.

The report was compiled in partnership with PricewaterhouseCoopers. The report said that climate change has already started to exacerbate the fragility of poorer communities and emerging economies. The report titled 'partnership to promote climate action - a collaboration with the private sector also warned that emerging economies are most vulnerable to climate change.

A recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting noticed that developing nations required more finance to adapt to rising temperatures to prevent wars. Reportedly, average temperatures are soaring at the highest rate.

Middle East’s nations at risk

Climate change affects the social and environmental determinants of health. The report also claimed that climate change is leading to death and illness from increasingly frequent extreme weather events. The report said that projects to mitigate the risk that is funded by the private sector could help governments to reduce death rates by preparing vulnerable communities for extreme climate change such as heatwaves, storms, and floods, the disruption of food systems, and water-borne diseases. The report also encouraged cross-border cooperation to address climate change as it threatens every country in the region. The Middle East’s wealthier nations are also at risk.

Mohamed Al Sharhan, deputy managing director of the World Government Summit Organisation, said that the body offers an opportunity to governments to discuss ways to eradicate challenges faced by climate change globally. The summit drew leaders from around the world and they discussed important topics.
