Iran wants the US to return to the 2015 nuclear deal before reviving the terms

Despite suffering a huge deal after the United States backing out of the nuclear deal with Iran in 2018, the gulf country is reluctant to take the leap once again with the Biden administration as far as reviving the deal is concerned.

The Iranian foreign minister said that the country will not be accepting any precondition from the new US democratic government over its nuclear programme and has instead asked for the same deal as 2015 before talks about any matter can further happen.

Javad Zarif said that as per the prior deal, the US has some of the commitments which it failed to stand by. This came after President-elect Joe Biden on Thursday said that he was ready to withdraw all the sanctions and rejoin the nuclear deal on condition of Iran ‘strictly complying’ to the nuclear deal.

The situation between the two is highlighting the trust issues that one has for the other. Iran wants the US to take the first step while the American side wants to get the assurance of the Iranian leaders before any official announcement.

During his campaign for the November 3 elections, Joe Biden had promised two of the most talked-about and analyzed issues---sanctions on Iran and trade war with China--saying that he will look at a middle ground in both the issues. For Iran, he had said that he will be relaxing some of the sanctions and will discuss the situation further.

Since 2018, Donald Trump has been imposing strict economic sanctions on Iran completely disrupting the economy of the country. Trump, while announcing the sanctions, had said that due to Tehran’s involvement in undemocratic and violent related activities in the region, the US is imposing these sanctions. The incumbent president has shown a very strict front for Iran due to its alleged involvement in funding terrorism in the Middle East.

Because of all these suspicions, the Trump administration decided to back out from this deal which gave Tehran a free pass and now the country is exceeding its limits to nuclear activities. Now the suspicions of Iran using this program as the cover has increased as there is no one to monitor the whole situation.

The Iranian government however insists that its nuclear-related intentions are completely peaceful.

Not long ago Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned the Iranian government against trusting the foreigners. He warned against trusting after President Hassan Rouhani hinted towards cooperating with the Joe Biden government. He has then said, “we can’t trust foreigners and hope for an opening on their part.”
