Lebanon's Aoun opposes Hariri's cabinet nominees list, causing more contention in govt

The political dilemma in Lebanon sprang with the resignation of PM Saad Hariri on October 29, 2019, because of the anti-government protests. The nation is still confronting a crisis after the formation of a new government.

Samir Geagea, the Lebanese Forces chief also censured the unfit ruling government on Saturday and indirectly pressed for President Michel Aoun's resignation.

Geagea stated in the Strong Republic bloc meeting that if he were the President, he would have surely stepped down.

Hariri who got nominated again as Lebanon's PM in Oct 2020, failed to shape the cabinet until now. Meanwhile, due to the ongoing socio-economical crisis, the public protest continued all through 2020 despite coronavirus lockdowns.

The Lebanese President Michel Aoun has opposed Saad Hariri's monopoly in selecting his cabinet members without discussing it with the President.

As per the Lebanese presidency official statement, Aoun never proposed any party nominee for cabinet ministers and didn't present the PM-designate with a rundown of names. It emphasized that the most recent proposed names by Hariri differed from the list prior discussed with Aoun.

In light of the current president's statement, Hariri's office gave a statement saying the PM-assign had gotten a rundown of nominees from the president during their subsequent meeting, and he chose four Christian nominees from it.

On August 4, 2020, a massive blast at Beirut Port took almost 200 lives and further added more physical and economic misery to the Lebanese people.

The increased pressure from the public following the port impact led to the failure of the government in managing the crisis and forced the resignation of PM Hassan Diab.

After the growing socio-economic crisis worsened in Lebanon after the blast, the French President Emmanuel Macron came to help the nation during its most challenging time.

Macron visited the nation after the blast and told the political authority that no monetary aid would be given to them until they bring reform and form a new government. A global meeting was held on August 9, 2020, during which almost $300 million aid was secured.

However, on Monday, Hariri, and Aoun declared their differences over cabinet candidates in two announcements in which they accused each other of blocking the formation of a new administration.
