US ignores human rights concerns in Egypt as it sanctions major arms deal

Ignoring the concerns regarding the human rights violation in Egypt, the United States has agreed to 2.5 billion arms sales to the Arab country.

On Tuesday, the Biden administration approved of the deal and ignored the triggering situation in the country. The announcement came merely after hours after congressional Democrats requested the government other pending smaller packages of military assistance.

The deal was to be fulfilled by last year but due to human rights violations in the country, they decided to postpone the arms deal till the situation is rectified. The US had said that till the Egyptian government meets certain conditions related to the rights, they will not be taking any call regarding it.

The US states department confirmed the deal saying that the sale was unrelated to 130 million in foreign military financing that was earlier in question.

The deal did not go any further in September and still remains in limbo but experts suspect that the US is compensating Egypt with this deal. Despite them denying it to be the same deal, the size of the deal raises a lot of questions.

The lawmakers are now criticizing it saying that the Biden administration went back on its stand. It shows the US in a bad light and projects that we support a country that is meeting minimal human rights standards.

The sale that was finalized on Tuesday was supposed to consist of 12 Super Hercules C-130 transport aircraft and related equipment which are worth 2.2 billion.
