US state Capitols put on alert over calls for more violence
Law enforcement officials across the United States are bracing for more possible violence in the coming days ahead of President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration ceremony.
As per reports, several state capitols have been put on alert after the FBI issued a warning to local law enforcement agencies of potentially armed protests by Trump supporters that can take place across other states in the days leading to the Inauguration Day. Fresh protests are expected by authorities in Washington and other states in the aftermath of the violent breach of the Capitol building on January 6.
Addressing a news conference on Monday, California Governor Gavin Newsom stated that officials are on high alert in Sacramento and additional security measures have been put in place in the state Capitol to counter any potential violence.
Similarly, Michigan state police have also heightened security at the state Capitol in Lansing. Washington Governor Jay Inslee has also ordered extra security in the wake of violence caused by Trump supporters around his mansion last week.
Besides state capitols, law enforcement officials have also ensured security and protective measures around other government buildings in various cities that could be targeted by protesters.
Pentagon is also planning to mobilize 10,000-15,000 troops of the National Guard forces in the city during the inauguration ceremony next week. More than 6,000 personnel have already been deployed as part of the security around the Capitol grounds in the wake of riots caused by pro-Trump supporters.
Security officials are working with federal officers at the state level to step up efforts to counter the future armed protests in various regions.
Due to safety concerns over possible disturbances in the coming days, the Park Service has suspended tours of the Washington Monument for visitors.
The US authorities have charged dozens of people in connection with the violence on the Capitol that caused massive damage and left five dead and several injured.
Meanwhile, Biden's inaugural committee announced that the theme of the inauguration ceremony of January 20 would be "America United." Last week, Donald Trump had stated that he would not be attending the ceremony.
In another news, House Democrats on Monday introduced an article of impeachment against outgoing President Trump on charges of inciting his supporters to cause a riot at Capitol Hill. With enough Democrat votes to secure the majority, the official impeachment vote is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
