Peaceful Protest Turned Arrest Frenzy: How Amsterdam’s Pro-Palestine Rally Was Shut Down

On a tense Sunday afternoon in Amsterdam’s Dam Square, police detained over 100 pro-Palestine demonstrators who had gathered in defiance of a newly enacted protest ban. The ban was upheld by an Amsterdam court earlier that day in response to escalating tensions involving Israeli football fans and counter-protesters. While the demonstrators maintained a peaceful stance, chanting slogans like “Free Palestine,” they were swiftly met by police in riot gear.

For a city like Amsterdam, known for embracing public demonstrations, the ban was an unexpected development. Just three days prior, violent confrontations broke out between Maccabi Tel Aviv fans and local residents. The scenes on Dam Square seemed surreal to many, as police engaged with demonstrators, leaving tourists and onlookers shocked. Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen reported seeing tourists from India wearing the keffiyeh, who were questioned by police despite their lack of involvement in the rally, underscoring the tense atmosphere.

The decision to impose a protest ban was sparked by events surrounding Thursday’s Europa League game between Ajax Amsterdam and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Fans of the visiting team burned a Palestinian flag, chanted anti-Palestinian slogans, and damaged property, leading to clashes with locals. The initial conflict prompted Amsterdam’s mayor, Femke Halsema, to enact the ban, with the court supporting the decision to prevent further violence over the weekend.

The protesters on Dam Square expressed anger at being labeled anti-Semitic for supporting Palestinian rights. For many, this framing of their cause felt like an attempt to discredit their movement. Signs at the protest made their stance clear, with one reading, “We can fight anti-Semitism and genocidal Zionism at the same time.” The demonstrators called for the city to recognize their efforts as rooted in opposition to Israel’s political actions, not as hostility toward Jewish people.

This ban on protests marks a pivotal moment in Amsterdam’s recent history. Typically supportive of free speech, the city has hosted a series of Palestinian solidarity rallies in recent years with little interference. However, the recent incidents involving Israeli fans and local counter-protesters have pushed authorities into uncharted territory, forcing them to make challenging decisions to maintain peace.

With the protest ban now extended until Thursday, Amsterdam authorities are preparing for possible future demonstrations. As the city struggles with rising anti-Semitic incidents, residents are left questioning where the line should be drawn between upholding public safety and preserving the right to peaceful assembly.
