Algeria's Strategic Intervention in Sudan’s Conflict: Donating MiG-29 Fighter Jets

 Algeria’s role in Africa’s defense landscape has gained significant attention in recent years. With its growing military capability and focus on modernizing its air force, Algeria has emerged as a key player in providing military aid to neighboring countries. One of the most recent and potentially impactful moves involves Algeria’s reported donation of surplus Russian-imported MiG-29 fighter jets to the Sudanese Air Force.

A Shift in Military Balance

The Algerian Ministry of Defense is reportedly set to donate these surplus MiG-29 aircraft, currently a part of Algeria’s air combat fleet, to support Sudan’s national armed forces. This donation comes at a critical time for Sudan, a country in the midst of ongoing internal conflicts and political instability, exacerbated by the 2019 coup that overthrew President Omar al-Bashir.The Algerian MiG-29 fighter jets, while not the latest in modern aviation technology, still represent a significant boost to Sudan’s military capabilities. These aircraft, originally delivered to Algeria under a three-way agreement with Russia and Belarus in 1999, played a crucial role in Algeria’s defense strategy until the 2006 shift towards more advanced MiG-29SMT fighters. However, the cancellation of that order led to the return of those aircraft to Russia, and Algeria shifted its focus towards heavier Su-30MKA fighters.

Algeria’s Modernization Path

In recent years, Algeria has embarked on an ambitious plan to modernize its air force, acquiring newer aircraft and phasing out older models. Between 2020 and 2022, Algeria procured 14 state-of-the-art MiG-29M fighters, in addition to increasing its fleet of Su-30MKAs, which now form the backbone of its air defense. These newer models, combined with planned acquisitions of fifth-generation Su-57 fighters, have allowed Algeria to decommission older MiG-29 models, leading to a surplus.Rather than allowing these surplus MiG-29s to go unused, Algeria's decision to donate them to Sudan appears to be a calculated move to strengthen relations with its African neighbor. The MiG-29 jets, though aging, still offer valuable capabilities in terms of air superiority, making them an effective tool in Sudan’s ongoing internal conflicts.
