Assad regains control over Syria, promises to handle sanctions imposed by the west
Once again, Bashar Assad completed his swearing-in ceremony on Saturday as he was announced as the President of Syria for the fourth term.
The Syrian president has been controversial for forcing the results on the people in the war-torn country. He pledged to be responsible for dealing with western sanctions which were imposed due to threats in the country. He also promised to bring the country on a track that has been destroyed due to years of fighting.
The swearing-in ceremony, which was held in the presidential palace, was attended by clergymen, members of parliament, political figures, army officers, and other supporters of the president. The re-election of Assad as the president of the nation was handled with severe scrutiny by the west and was considered a sham as Assad has proved to be a huge threat for the nation.
Assad has been in power since 2000 and with the new term, he will look to further establish his strength and control over the country. He also has a terrible economic crisis to deal with and it is further declining every single day. During his inaugural speech, he talked about "liberating the land and confronting the economic and social ramifications of the war."
The western countries believe that whatever happened in Syria, from the ISIS attack to the economic crisis, is all because of Assad. Assad has been accused of corruption and using financial assistance to his benefit and not help the country and people prosper. His speech at the presidential parliament lasted an hour where he said, "Making things better is possible, certainly possible.”
He also emphasized the possibility to recover from losses by saying that the doors are not yet completely closed and together Syria has to find a solution and move towards it. His promises hold no regard in the international forum especially after the United Nations identified that over 80 percent of Syrians are living below the poverty line and the rate has excessively increased during his tenure.
A lot of countries are interested in Syria and its affairs and the likes of Russia and Turkey top the list. There were a lot of efforts to control these countries from counting on their efforts in Syria as it was further hampering the situation but regardless of the results, they continue to interfere in the country’s politics.
