White House Warns of Impending Funding Shortfall for Ukraine Amid Political Controversy
White House budget director Shalanda Young issued a letter on Monday to Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and other congressional leaders, cautioning that the United States is rapidly running out of both time and funds to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
In October, the Biden administration had requested nearly $106 billion from Congress to finance ambitious plans for Ukraine, and Israel, and bolster US border security. However, with Republicans holding a slim majority in the House of Representatives, allocating funds for Ukraine has become a contentious political issue, particularly among some right-leaning lawmakers.
The letter, released by the White House, stressed that halting funding and the supply of weapons to Ukraine would significantly increase the likelihood of Russian victories. Young emphasized the urgent need for congressional action, stating, "I want to be clear: without congressional action, by the end of the year, we will run out of resources to procure more weapons and equipment for Ukraine and to provide equipment from US military stocks."
She underscored that there is no readily available funding source to address this critical moment, asserting, "We are out of money — and nearly out of time." The plea from the White House highlights the pressing nature of the situation and the potential consequences of delayed action on crucial funding for Ukraine's defense efforts against Russia.
