Are Arab Christians lowkey hoping for US sanctions on Syria to continue?

This is a very complicated issue in the Arab world to talk about. It won’t be wrong to say that the involvement of the United States in the region has been welcomed by some but rejected by most. Syria is one such country.

The war-torn country is in trouble in every sphere. Be its economy or infrastructure or the government conduct in the country. A part of it is controlled by Russia, some of the facilities come under Turkey while others have the US’ influence on them. It is difficult to predict the call of the Arab christian figures in the area and their stand on the American involvement.

Syria’s former UN permanent representative Bashar Jaafari left New York but as per reports there was only one person who came to see off the representative--his office assistant. This in a sense showed what the US identifies Bashar Assad’s regime as. It showcases how excluded the anarchical regime of Assad is from the rest of the world. Unformetly for the people, they cannot help the situation.

Jaafari has started working as the deputy minister of foreign affairs in Damascus and has fallen back into the arms of a regime that was his one and only supporter at the United Nations headquarters. He has dedicated himself solely to the idea of blaming the entire war situation on the western countries.

The time he spent at the Security Council he lived up to the position favouring the Assad regime only to have it positioned against the civilians. He even went on to the extent of calling western nations ‘Ali Baba’s thieves without borders’ and also said that they are showing interest in the war-torn country for wealth.

But these allegations and claims did nothing to help the situation and the trial for Assad. To the disappointment of Jaafari, the security general instead strengthened the stance on Assan by asking him to come clean with his usage of chemical weapons, which the organisation said that he had used against his own people.

Be it the Americans or the United Nations, the western facilities are well aware of the intentions of the Assad regime. Because of this, they have completely rejected the idea of ‘sham elections’ that the regime stresses will be conducted. They have also decided to throw water on Syrian authorities and note that Syrian refugees can return to a now ‘safe Syria’.

The only country to be defending Syrian power is Russia but other than Moscow, countries have no doubt that only the Assad regime is behind the exponentially large number of atrocities inflicted on Syrians. Even the state of corruption in the country is because of the corrupt nature of rule in the diturbed country.

But the regime is well aware that with the sanctions in place, it is a difficult job to function and run the country. The focus on Iran for example appointment of a senior White House adviser keen on targeting Iran may be the kind of interval that Syrian regime is hoping for.

One of the reformers talked to the Arab news and said, “We as Syrians are afraid of those advisers who have good ties with the Iranians.” He added that they are afraid that they might sell them out like they did during Obama’s tenure.

As per reports, Christians in most of the gulf region feel that it is better for the civilians in Syria that the US continues its sanctions on the country and the Assad regime as it will only help in keeping the rebellious regime in check.

Letting go of the country’s top rule will only affect the nature of functioning in the country and will worsen the situation for people already living under terror.
