With Trump out of office how to avoid authoritarians in future
United States Presidential Elections have rendered the highly controversial president Donald Trump out of the White House. The current votes count show nearly 80 million American people to have voted for Joe Biden, making him the 46th President of the United States of America. This voting has been unprecedented as no candidate has ever received such high count of votes.
But what more this voting highlighted was that Trump managed to receive 11 million more votes than he received in 2016. This is a cause of concern as it showcases Trump’s increased support in various communities going under stress. These communities are the ones struggling with poverty and unemployment, with inadequate healthcare and childcare. This wasn’t predicted by-election pandits and that should be enough to scare the Democrats for 2024.
Though Trump widely caused chaos in the country with his policies regarding immigration, his unapologetic stand for causes like Black Lives Matter, atrocious actions against Muslims, Latinos, and women, he still managed to get this ahead with votes. The reason for this is because he projected himself as ‘friends of country’s working-class’ – perhaps the most outlandish lie of his entire presidency. On the contrary, Trump filled all the key posts in his administration with billionaires, more than any other president in history. Furthermore, he vehemently sacked anyone who disagreed with him and replaced them with his supporters. He gave huge tax breaks to the rich and proposed funding cuts in the healthcare and education sector. His desperate attempts to nullify Obamacare would basically deprive over 32 million people of healthcare, including those with pre-existing conditions. But still, what makes one ponder is why still a certain working-class seems to believe Donald Trump. The working class which is facing job loss and pay cuts sees Trump as a ‘real fighter’ who is standing up against everyone, every day, even if it's for himself.
On January 20th, Joe Biden will be officially sworn in as the President of the USA and Democratic Nancy Pelosi as speaker of the House. But if Democratic Party wants to ensure that it stays in power after four years and later as well, it has to ensure to win over the working class. In past, certain decisions made by Democrats have worked against the working American class, but that must change now.
Joe Biden ran for president with a strong mandate for the working class, and that must be put into action now. Democratic Party must prove through its actions and show the powerful that it would stand for the working class and this includes standing up firm against anti-working class policies of Wall Street, the pharmaceutical industry, the health insurance industry, fossil fuel industry and many other profitable firms that have long exploited the employees.
It is time to choose the side of the working American section, and that includes Blacks, Latinos, Asian Americans, Whites, Native Americans and all immigrants. This will ensure to keep more authoritarians out of office and secure the democracy that the US is known for.
