"Palestinian Leader Condemns Iranian Praise of October 7 Attacks

In a rebuke of Iran's leadership, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas criticized comments made by Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei regarding the Hamas-led attacks on Israel that occurred on October 7.

Khamenei had previously stated that the October 7 attacks "had happened exactly at the moment the region needed it", suggesting the attacks were a necessary response to alleged plans by the U.S., Israel, and some regional countries to "change the equation in the region."

However, Abbas firmly rejected Khamenei's remarks, saying the Palestinian people "do not need wars that do not bring them freedom and independence." Abbas' office issued a statement accusing Khamenei's comments of being "clearly aimed at sacrificing Palestinian blood" and asserting they would not lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

The comments highlight the ongoing tensions between the Palestinian Authority, which exercises limited control in the West Bank, and the militant group Hamas, which has received significant backing from Iran. While Hamas has positioned itself as the "Axis of Resistance" against Israel and U.S. influence in the region, the Palestinian Authority has sought a more diplomatic approach to achieving Palestinian statehood.

Meanwhile, doubts emerged regarding a proposed ceasefire and hostage release deal outlined by U.S. President Joe Biden, as heavy fighting continued for a third day since his address. Netanyahu's office stressed that Israel would continue the military operation until all of its "goals are achieved," including the destruction of Hamas's military and governing capabilities.

The lack of coordination between the U.S., Israel, and Palestinian factions underscores the complexities of the ongoing conflict and the divergent interests of the various parties involved."
