Anjar served as a major commercial centre during the Umayyad civilization, the first Islamic dynasty ruling from Damascus.

The Holy Valley and the Forest of the Cedars of God were designated as UNESCO property in 1998. These places were important during early Christian monastic settlements in the world. The Cedars of God acted as an important place in the building of ships, temples and palaces in ancient times.
